Vinnie and Beck

Vinnie just played a gig in the UK with Beck at the Royal Festival Hall "Meltdown" festival (some sort of tribute to Jimi Hendrix).

By all press accounts Jeff was the highlight of the evening (duh), the rest of the night was a hodgepodge of everything from harps to accordians trying to play Hendrix songs. Jeff played with Pino, Jason and Vinnie.

yeah..this was on becks site, but it didn't say if vinnie was playing!

The vinnie site needs to have more updates! this gig wasnt on there!

His first gig with beck in japan was yesterday and theres another one today.

If i had chosen to come to L.A i would have been at those 2 shows [img]frown.gif[/img]

Oh well opportunity cost! Im so happy coming to l.a anyway so its cool

Hi everyone,

I've been lurking around here for a couple of years-this thread
made me finally join up....I'm a drummer here in Nashville, but
I also have a small video production company. We've put out one
project so far(shameless plug-The Players Live in Nashville with
Eddie Bayers, Michael Rhodes, Brent Mason, etc) but I'm posting
to let everyone here know that we've been in touch with Jeff Beck's management about a video of the japan tour. We have a
Japanese partner who was willing to film a show for TV, and give
us the DVD rights...however, Jeff's management, for whatever
reason, passed on the deal, saying they had no interest in filming this tour for any format. Very disappointing, but this kind of thing happens a lot. Whenever there's a video you've seen on TV or in an older format and wonder why it's not out
on DVD, chances are it's the artist's management decision. We
have had deals for Tower of Power(fell through, though there was a good reason in this instance)Mike Stern (turned down) and have rights to some fantastic jazz shows originally shown on Japanese TV (Herbie Hancock, Joshua Redmon, Lee Ritenour, Brecker Brothers, etc) . So far, no Herbie or Joshua will be out; the others are still possible. Just thought I'd let everyone know what's up.... there ARE companies trying to get this stuff out for people to enjoy- unfortunately, the way the business has been run, the consumers wants are not usually taken into account (seems strange, doesn't it? ) Sorry for the long post-wanted to let you guys know about this ...

As far as Jeff Beck - I guess we can hope they might change their
mind, but it isn't likely.....

I don't know if this is entirely true. My guess is that it has more to do with how the profits will eventually be distributed and accounting practices as WELL as the likelihood that pirating will strip away any real profit.

Let's face it, if everyone really stood to gain, and the profit were allocated fairly, there would be no reason NOT to put out a DVD of the tour. To claim that consumers' (or fans') needs are being ignored is a tad harsh IMO. There's bound to be more to the story. [img]graemlins/smarty.gif[/img]

I looked back on my message, and I probably didn't make the point I meant to....what I meant by the consumer's wants not being considered was that most music DVDs are not released
primarily because the company thinks the fans would like it..as
you said, it's more about how easy it is to secure the rights and
other legal issues...obviously, that's the way business works, and I don't have a problem with that. But in fact, money isn't always an issue( to the labels) They're just going to charge back the cost of making the video to the artists recoupment account in most cases. In instances where the artist has some say in what gets
released( which isn't always the case) the reasons for not releasing a project in our experience have rarely had to do with money,but more about non business issues( for example, one
video, which was filmed for TV a few years ago and shown in Japan, was turned down by the artist because the music he plays
now is different than what's on the video and he didn't want to confuse the viewers.....)In Jeff Beck's case, I doubt it was money-
it would 've been a very good deal- but I'm thinking it had more to do with the idea that this is the first time this band has been out and Jeff probably wouldn't think they should film it so soon..
the management didn't seem to think there was anything more interesting than usual about this lineup when we talked to them, so I'm pretty sure they saw no compelling reason to film either.That's all I meant about the fans wishes-Beck's management certainly has the right to put out or not put out
anything they want, but, say in this case, I bet most fans wouldn't have a problem with seeing the shows even though the band just got together.
Also, one more point you made about piracy- I put together
my company partly to try and let the artist gain some income from
these shows. A lot of the shows are being bootlegged and downloaded anyway..we want to get these out legally, in better
quality, and under the artists' control so they get paid for their work.So far we've noticed a decent percentage of people will opt for an authorized version over a bootleg, if you give them the
option, so we're trying to do that...

Sorry for rambling- I'm not sure I'm making my point too well...
What I do know is, we've been in a lot of meetings about video projects, and what the end- consumer would want rarely comes into play. I don't think it's a conscious decision to not care about the fans, there's just as you said, many more pressing
reasons business-wise, and believe me, just because it would
"make sense" to release something, doesn't mean it will, or can,
happen....

I guarantee you w this incantation, the earlier stages of this line-up of shows will be only slightly less "hot" than subsequent/later shows on the tour...the "worst" day for this line-up [if i can say that, & i shouldn't] would be any MTV band's unheard-of & un-realized best day. ;-) I exag to the extreme, but y'all gets m' point there. /:-O

But yes i do also realize that every artist wants their backup band to be "broken or worn-in," comfy in the grooove, & shizz-sizzlin' when all is said & done. But this line-up could hit the planks spank-cold & knock the dumbshtuff dead-out. [img]cool.gif[/img]

So, Groove, what tunes were they playing? Wired, Blow By Blow, Guitar Shop tracks? Anything recognizable?

Pino toured with Beck (and Bozzio) probably a decade ago, so he's an old hand. I know Vinnie had an arrangement to sub for Simon with Beck years ago but it fell through when Townsend decided not to tour and Simon re-claimed his chair with Jeff. I don't know who was more disappointed, Vinnie, or me. But it's happening now at least.

I'd like some video too but I'd settle for a CD. [img]frown.gif[/img]
